About the National Design Archive

This site is the first-step in the creation of a National Design Archive to celebrate all aspects of design creativity in Australia. The result will be a resource for all practitioners, businesses and individuals interested in design, historic or contemporary.

The Design Archive will have five major component sections, detailed below ...

Exhibitions heading image.
Physical and virtual exhibitions of Australian Design will be showcased within this section of the Archive.

Professional currators, industry bodies and design exhibitors (both permanent and temporary) will have access to this section of the archive to further highlight these collections of design in Australia.

Researchers heading image.
Design researchers, journalists and commentators can submit work for inclusion in a predominantly 'text based' area of the archive.

This searchable environment will provide a rich resource for design research, design students and others wishing to explore Australia's design heritage.

Education heading image.
Australia is a leading educator of design professionals.

The education section of the archive will showcase student work, including the publishing of final year exhibitions and the best from Australia's leading design schools. The archive will also provide a rich source of inspiration for current students and established designers alike.

Industry heading image.
Professional organisations such as AGDA, DIA, AIMIA and ICOGRADA will have pride of place in the National Design Archive.

Design collections managed by Australia's peak design bodies will have their own section of the archive, as will award winners from the design competitions held by industry groups.

Pinnacle heading image.
Percolating up from the other archives and from external sources will be the Pinnacle Archive. A repository of the peak of Australian design, work that has made a significant contribution to the cultural and historical landscape of Australia.

In 2007, a panel of experts will be assembled to create criteria for inclusion and to select the first pieces to be added in 2008 to this prestigious collection of national importance.

Construction of the National Design Archive

The creation of such an ambitious project is a joint effort of a large number of partners and supporters. Initially, the National Design Archive is being driven by a Foundation Council. After the launch of the Pinnacle Collection in 2008, the Foundation Council will step aside to be replaced by an elected Archive Council to continue to develop the project and manage the collections.
